Boeing 787 Dreamliners are built at the aviation company's North Charleston, South Carolina, assembly plant on May 30, 2023. Boeing told employees on Monday that it expects a slower increase in production and deliveries of new 787 Dreamliner planes because of supplier shortages of "a few key parts." The company had separately been trying to boost output of 787 Dreamliners after quality problems suspended deliveries for nearly two years, ending in mid-2022. "To that end, we have shared with our customers that we expect a slower increase in our rate of production and deliveries," he wrote in the memo, reported earlier by Reuters, adding that the company still plans to increase the rate steadily because of high demand. Boeing reports quarterly results and will likely detail its production plans before the market opens on Wednesday.

An employee works on the tail of a Boeing Co. Dreamliner 787 plane on the production line at the company's final assembly facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. Boeing denied the allegations, calling them "inaccurate" and said it stood by the planes' safety. Salehpour is scheduled to appear along with another whistleblower who worked at Boeing, a former aviation official and an independent safety expert at a Senate hearing on Wednesday about aircraft safety called "Examining Boeing's Broken Safety Culture: Firsthand Accounts." Boeing last week declined to comment on those specific allegations, citing the FAA's ongoing whistleblower investigation, but said, "Retaliation is strictly prohibited at Boeing." The company is scheduled to report quarterly results on April 24, when it will face investor questions about aircraft safety, production rates and FAA oversight.

Boeing sought on Monday to reassure the public of the safety of its 787 Dreamliner plane days before a whistle-blower is scheduled to testify before Congress about his concerns regarding the jet’s structural integrity. The presentation came just under a week after The New York Times reported the allegations by the whistle-blower, Sam Salehpour, who works as a quality engineer at Boeing and is set to testify before a Senate panel on Wednesday. Mr. Salehpour said that sections of the fuselage of the Dreamliner, a wide-body plane that makes extensive use of composite materials, were not properly fastened together and that the plane could suffer structural failure over time as a result. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating his allegations. Mr. Salehpour’s claims instantly created another public-relations problem for Boeing, which has been facing intense scrutiny over its manufacturing practices after a panel came off a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

Jim Watson | AFP | Getty ImagesAlmost half of all voters, or 48%, say canceling student loan debt is an important issue to them in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections, a new survey finds. Debt forgiveness has historically been a highly partisan issue, with supporters and detractors split down party lines. Almost a quarter, 23%, of Gen X voters surveyed said they or someone in their household had student loan debt. The Supreme Court last June struck down the president's $400 billion plan to deliver student loan forgiveness to as many as 40 million Americans. Meanwhile, the popularity of loan forgiveness among voters may prove a challenge for Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee for president.

But in the state where Haley once served as governor, she has trailed Trump by sizable margins in most polling. A Suffolk University/USA TODAY poll among likely GOP voters had Trump leading Haley 63%-35%, a 28-point spread. For many GOP voters, Trump is who they know best. If anyone was waiting for the other shoe to drop in the upcoming presidential race, former President Donald Trump just did, launching his own line of tennis shoes on Saturday. "I've wanted to do this for a long time," Trump said when he announced the launch of a sneaker line at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia. In his brief remarks at the sneaker launch, Trump indicated the line could be an effort to reach out to younger supporters, saying, "We're going to turn this country around fast. The line, called Trump Sneakers, is available for preorder online. CNN —President Joe Biden and his allies attacked Donald Trump over abortion after the New York Times reported Friday that the former president has privately expressed support for a 16-week federal ban, as Democrats center the politically potent issue ahead of November’s election. Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told CNN the former president has not committed to backing a national abortion ban. But Trump has not made abortion a key part of his campaign speeches and has steered clear on the trail from outlining any specific abortion legislation he would push for if reelected. This comes in sharp contrast with Biden’s campaign, which has put abortion rights front and center in the 2024 race, with TV ads and a “reproductive freedoms tour” led by Vice President Kamala Harris. And a CNN poll conducted in November found that Americans align more with the Democratic Party than the Republican Party on the issue of abortion.

Haley, Trump's former U.N. ambassador and his last major rival in the GOP presidential race, has been condemning Trump's remarks for days about her husband Michael Haley, who is deployed in Africa with the National Guard. For many months, President Biden has been rallying global leaders to provide more military aid to Ukraine and pressing Congress to pass a multibillion-dollar aid package to help the country beat back Russian aggression. Former President Donald J. Trump has been undermining that effort, pressing Republicans to thwart it. But on Wednesday, Mr. Trump tried to flip the script, suggesting that he would do more to protect Ukraine than Mr. Biden, who he said would effectively cede Ukraine as a gift to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. Speaking at a campaign event in North Charleston, S.C., Mr. Trump said that, under a Biden presidency, Mr. Putin is “going to be given everything he wants, including Ukraine. He’s got a gift.”Then Mr. Trump — who often positively invokes Mr. Putin as an authoritarian strongman, and who acknowledged in his speech that they got along — doubled down, saying that Mr. Biden “is going to give” Ukraine to Mr. Putin.

Haley's hometown was her first stop as she barnstormed across the state in the closing days ahead of South Carolina's Feb. 24 primary, aiming to cut into Donald Trump's popularity in the state. Back in Bamberg, the city's mayor, Nancy Foster, introduced Haley, recalling the former governor's parents as “gracious and accommodating." Bamberg County is unlikely to go into either Haley or Trump's win column for the general election. There were none of those references on Tuesday, as Foster welcomed Haley back home. “Nikki, Bamberg is so very proud of you, and we wish you well in all your endeavors," Foster said Tuesday.

Biden's support among Black voters has waned considerably since he assembled his winning coalition four years ago. Throughout her career, the South Carolina-born daughter of Indian immigrants has generally called out acts of individual prejudice and the people responsible. But Haley, now a Republican presidential candidate, has avoided denouncing society or groups of people as racist. Haley, who was Trump's U.N. ambassador, has described facing prejudice in her upbringing in rural Bamberg. “My parents never wanted us to think we lived in a racist country,” Haley told reporters recently. When asked by reporters whether Trump's criticisms of her are racist, Haley has instead portrayed him as “desperate to stop our momentum," using any means necessary to attack his opponents.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley took aim at GOP frontrunner Donald Trump on Sunday for his attempts to further delay a bipartisan border deal that has been deadlocked in Congress for months. "Donald Trump, the last thing he needs to do is tell them to wait to pass the border deal until the election. Notably absent from the people demanding lawmakers strike a deal: Trump. Former South Carolina Gov. The Biden campaign has long been preparing for Trump to win the nomination, but it is acutely aware of polling reflecting Haley’s strength over Biden in a one-on-one matchup. And behind closed doors, the Biden campaign is cheering Haley’s decision to stay in the race as they monitor Trump lashing out at the former South Carolina governor. It has been welcome news for the president’s reelection team to see Haley prolong the Republican contest and force the Trump campaign to use its resources and time to attack her. “Go forth and prosper,” one Biden campaign official said, describing the team’s delight in seeing the Trump-Haley feud continue.

The Republican presidential campaign of Nikki Haley said it raked in a $1.2 million spike in donations in one day, after former President Donald Trump vowed to blacklist Haley's donors. The former United Nations ambassador's campaign said it has taken a total of $2.6 million since polls closed in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, which Trump won by more than 11 points. But polls of the Palmetto State show Haley trailing Trump by much wider margins. On Wednesday night, Trump ratcheted up the pressure on Haley by targeting her donors. For her part, Haley insisted Monday on Fox News that she’ll continue in the race, no matter the outcome of the New Hampshire primary.
